"Bedrooms upstairs to let out as lodgings" and "provid[ing] rooms open every day where the leading periodicals may be seen, games, such as chess and backgammon, played, and a pleasant rendezvous afforded for such Harvard men as may care to drop in to smoke and chat with their fellows" were the primary reasons for leasing the brownstone.
