Eligibility
Over eleven thousand men and women of Harvard have selected the Harvard Club of New York City as their "home away from home." In general, a person is eligible for regular membership if he or she:
- has received a degree from Harvard University
- is or has been a tenured member of the faculty of Harvard University
- is or has been a faculty member or officer or other holder of a University appointment for at least one full academic year
- is or has been a member of any Board or Committee of the University
- is or has been a student in good standing in any department of the University for at least one full academic year, except that no current student in any department of the University shall be eligible unless he or she has already received a degree from the University
- has completed an academic program of a graduate department of the University which program is defined by the University as of June 1, 2004 as qualifying a program participant as an alumnus or alumna for purposes of inclusion in the Harvard Alumni Directory
Application Process
Becoming a member is easy, and we are here to help you through every step of the process.
- Please first complete an Application Form. Be sure to include all the required information, especially your undergraduate year. The requirement of recommendation letters from proposer and seconder has been suspended by the Board of Managers for a period of two years to expire in June, 2008.
- Once you have submitted your application, you are required to interview with Admissions Committee Members or delegates of the Committee. This is organized at the Club’s bi-monthly receptions held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you are unable to come to the Club, we can help you arrange to meet a delegate. Resident and suburban applicants need two interviews, non-resident applicants need one. A definition of each type of member is below.
- The next step is that the Admissions Committee meets to consider your application. Here is a list of Admissions Committee Meeting Dates and Application Deadlines. We will contact you immediately with the results of their meeting.
- Once you have been elected, the last step is to activate your membership. A candidate for regular membership shall become a member of the Club upon election and payment of the applicable entrance fee and annual dues.
- Admissions Policy: A candidate for regular membership shall become a member of the Club upon election and payment of the applicable entrance fee and annual dues.
- Entrance Fee & Dues: The entrance fee for regular members shall be at 100% of the applicable first year dues, subject to a minimum of $150.00. Entrance fees may be paid in 3 installments over two years, with the first one-third installment due upon election. The entrance fee is waived for Harvard College graduates who join the Club within one year of graduation, i.e., June-May.
Dues may be paid on a semi-annual basis as of July 1, and January 1, except that in the case of candidates elected after September 1, or March 1, the amount of dues payable shall be reduced by one half of the semi-annual dues for the current half year.
Dues schedule are subject to New York State Sales Tax.
Types/Classes of Membership
- Resident Member
- Regular members having a residence or regular place of business or place of employment in the five boroughs of New York City. Resident and Suburban Admissions Procedures.
- Suburban Member
- Regular members having a residence or a regular place of business or place of employment within a radius of 50 miles of the Clubhouse, but not within the five boroughs of New York City. Resident and Suburban Admissions Procedures.
- Non-Resident Member
- Regular members having neither a residence nor a regular place of business or place of employment within a radius of 50 miles** of the Clubhouse. Non-Resident Admissions Procedures
- Faculty
- Faculty and officers who are devoting their full time to the service of Harvard University.
- Summer Students
- Harvard summer students may enjoy the Harvard Club of New York's facilities, including the fully-equipped fitness center, for the summer from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Membership is $180 plus tax. This program is for any student who is currently enrolled in a Harvard degree program, is not graduating in June, and will be returning to Harvard in the fall. - Spouse Membership
- For members whose spouse is also a Harvard Graduate, his/her spouse can have their own membership for 50% of the annual dues for the higher class of membership and dues category in which either spouse would be classified if the other were not a member.
- Signing Privileges
- For spouses or life partners of members, 50% of the annual dues for the applicable category in effect from time to time and entitles holder to use of the Food, Beverage and Athletic Facilities only.
